Telomeres are what act as the "backbones of the chromosomes," protecting chromosome ends from erosions that could destroy the chromosomal material. "When telomeres get too short, the chromosomes can break, leading to cell death, chromosomal instability, and cancer," explains co-author, Nancy J. Kohn of the University of Massachusetts. The use of these chemicals was "clearly linked to the formation of long, unwieldy telomeres, a major and potentially lethal problem," says study leader Dr. Stephen D. Kroll, professor of toxicology, bioenvironmental sciences, and biochemistry at the University of Massachusetts. "These compounds can prevent cell death by slowing, or even blocking telomere length restoration, which can lead to hair loss, baldness, and early onset of breast cancer."
